What Is Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Laser skin rejuvenation has become a popular, non-surgical treatment method that has provided excellent results for many patients. These treatments typically use cutting-edge laser technology to stimulate tissue regeneration and collagen formation in targeted areas. The result is visibly improved texture, tone, and elasticity that can last for months. It can be used as a preventative treatment, as a series of treatments, or in combination with plastic surgery.
To enhance your results, it is recommended that you follow the detailed instructions from your specialist following treatment.
Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Laser skin rejuvenation is effective for patients with:
- Lighter skin types
- Pigmented freckles
- Brown spots
- Uneven skin texture
- Lines & Wrinkles
- Acne
- Vascular lesions
- Rosacea
- Mild to severe wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Sun damage spots
What Is Laser Resurfacing?
There are now many new options for patients who are seeking non-surgical facial rejuvenation. One of the most popular choices is Laser Skin Resurfacing. This can be used to treat facial and body wrinkles, scars, blemishes and acne. Laser allows extreme precision, including very delicate areas, such as the eyelids. Innovative treatments including CoolPeel, CO2, and IPL lasers offer various wave lengths to achieve your goals. For many laser resurfacing patients, the goal is to provide smoother, healthier, young, beautiful skin that glows! A combination of a fractional type laser treatments and ablative treatments on the surface of the skin can improve the wrinkles and the appearance of the outer surface of the skin, while stimulating the growth of new collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers.
Photofacials, also commonly called IPL or intense pulsed-light therapy, can be used to make the skin tone more even in color and texture. The new fountain of youth for skin care has evolved from studies recently reported from Stanford University showing the changes within the cellular DNA following ongoing treatment with the Photofacial lasers that reverse the changes of aging and provide skin cells that are more similar to skin cells of a 20 or 30-year old than the skin cells of a 56 or 70-year-old. These are some of the most exciting findings with regard to skin treatment with this particular wave length laser.
There is little to no downtime with laser skin rejuvenation and these treatments provide long lasting results. The treatment can be performed on the face and neck as well as the chest, arms and hands. Brown spots caused by sun damage, aging, or other forms of ultraviolet light and damaged by smoking can be largely mitigated, leaving the skin luminescent. Initial treatments may be performed at 4-6 week intervals, followed by an ongoing program of maintenance treatment every 4-5 months. This program has shown increased collagen regrowth, tightening of the skin, decreased laxity and improved clarity.
What Are Microlaser Peels (Mlp) And Nano Peels?
A micropeel is a laser peel that reaches midlevel below the epidermis that eliminates wrinkles, and brightens and tightens the skin, improving texture and tone. The skin will appear more youthful making the use make-up less necessary or certainly easier to apply. As a contrast, microdermabrasion generally addresses skin levels 1-2 Microns, a Nano peel 4-10 Microns and micropeel 10-50 Microns.
Many doctors have used these techniques and in turn this has given rise to the means for eyelid peels, such as the Madonna peel or the Hollywood peel. These are usually very light Nano peels or micropeels that will heal within just a few days, thus having very little down time but then are repeated at intervals as short as every two weeks to ultimately obtain the best possible result.
What Are Profractional and Fraxel Laser Treatments?
A profractional treatment is a type of fractional laser treatment that goes deeper into the dermis to not only eliminate wrinkles but to stimulate collagen and elastin which improves the skin tone and texture over time. The improvement can be seen in the first few months and may continue to improve in months 3-6. Combinations of lasers may be used as well, including CO2 lasers which generate more heat in the deeper tissues and micropeel on the surface of the skin. The choices of the specific laser packages depend upon the color of the skin, the quality of the skin, and the amount of downtime that you would prefer to have during your healing period.
Trifecta Laser Packages
The Trifecta involves a combination of laser treatments to get the ultimate best results for your skin. Common treatments may include IPL, CoolPeel and RF Microneedling. Skin tightening is an additional component of the Trifecta treatment that stimulates collagen deep below the surface of the skin and causes tightening. The lasers primarily cause resurfacing of the epidermis as noted above.
What is the Best Age for Treatments?
There is no specific age that is best to undergo laser treatments. Young patients are typically first concerned with having acne or acne scars treated. Slightly older patients may wish to have early lines treated. Our oldest patients are often concerned with brown spots and reversing sun damage in addition to treating wrinkles. Each decade of age may have their own specific needs and benefits from these laser treatments.
Goals of Laser Skin Resurfacing
The goals of laser skin resurfacing in Orange County can vary but often include treating one or more of the below.

- Sun damaged skin
- Blotchy skin and uneven pigment
- Liver or age spots
- Birth marks
- Enlarged pores
- Excessive hair of the face and neck
- Rosacea
- Active acne
- Broken blood vessels
Imagine waking up to beautiful skin with your first look in the mirror. Smoother, firmer, more even pigment, missing wrinkles around your eyes or mouth, and just smooth luminescent skin.
Thinking about a Consultation?
If you are unhappy with your skin’s appearance consider scheduling a consultation with our BioSpa® team in Orange County for a full assessment and recommendations for a treatment plan. We offer both in-person and virtual consultations. Even though laser skin resurfacing is not plastic surgery, it is important that a highly trained doctor, nurse or physician assistant perform these treatments to avoid complications and to obtain the best possible results.
When choosing a medical spa, be sure it is overseen with a board-certified surgeon on staff. Look for the following:
- Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
- Membership in the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
- Staff membership in a major local hospital.
- Strong reputation among other medical professionals.
Much like chemical peels, which are also provided in our office, there is a wide variety of laser treatments, some of which are noted above. IPL treatments are some of the simplest of laser treatments.
What Does The Treatment Look Like?
The eyes will be protected with special glasses and the laser hand-piece is held close to your skin. With the sound of each beep you will feel a slight warmth to your skin. For some laser treatments, the skin is numbed ahead of time. With deeper or stronger lasers, a sedative or local anesthetic may be used. Additionally, with some laser devices a cooling element is attached to the laser which gently cools the skin before the laser beam touches, again, providing a numbness to the skin so there is little or no discomfort.
Where Are Laser Treatments Performed?
Laser treatments are performed at BioSpa® in Orange County where we have specially-equipped laser treatment rooms. At times, if laser treatments are combined with surgical procedures, the laser may be used in the outpatient surgical facilities that our board-certified plastic surgeons have privileges with. All of the facilities that we use have a team of board certified anesthesiologists, certified nurses, fully licensed operating staff and the facilities themselves are fully accredited and are state-of-the-art.
Preparing For Laser Resurfacing
Preparation for laser skin resurfacing can vary depending on the specific treatment and the skin condition that we are treating. We often ask that you stay out of the sun for one to two weeks before treatment and avoid using any products containing a Retinol or Retin-A for 5 days before your appointment. Micropeels and Nano peels likewise require the same basic preparation before their treatments. Patients who are undergoing profractional or fraxelated Erbium or CO2 laser treatments are provided with a list of preoperative care instructions which are usually started at home 2-4 weeks in advance to prepare the skin so that you will have the best possible result with quickest healing.
Post-Treatment Care
No specific care is required for IPL treatment. Skin resurfacing lasers, including profractional, Erbium and CO2 fraxel treatments may require mild pain medication, antibiotics and topical care to reduce swelling and diminish discomfort while healing.
A complete set of instructions will be provided at the time of your initial consultation so you are completely aware of what will be required during your healing period.
